Why do we need the outdoor auto recloser?

The faults in the power system can be classified into two main types:

1. Transient faults (accounting for over 80% of overhead line faults):

· Causes: Lightning strike (over-voltage), short-term contact of branches due to strong wind, contact by birds or small animals, etc.

· Characteristics: The fault causes will disappear on their own after the switch trips and the arc extinguishes. For example, after a lightning strike, the air insulation will recover; the branches will be blown apart by the wind.

· Countermeasures: If the switch is immediately re-closed, the line can resume normal power supply.

2. Permanent faults:

· Causes: Pole collapse and line breakage, insulation breakdown of equipment, etc.

· Characteristics: The fault is permanent and cannot be restored on its own.

· Countermeasures: The switch must remain in the open position and wait for the maintenance personnel to arrive for handling.

In the era without outdoor auto recloser: Whenever a line tripped, regardless of the type of fault, power supply would be interrupted until the line inspectors located the fault point and manually reset it. This resulted in a large number of unnecessary long power outages, as most of the faults were actually transient in nature.

Application Scenario

· 10kV overhead lines of the distribution network: This is the most classic and widely applicable scenario for outdoor auto recloser.

· Long-distance rural power supply lines: These lines are exposed to the natural environment and are more prone to lightning strikes and the influence of trees.

· Outgoing switches of substations: They also often have the automatic reclosing function configured.
